Environmentally-friendly shoes

We aim to be carbon neutral by 2050, which means reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the Mizuno Group’s corporate activities to effectively zero. We are also striving to reduce the environmental impact of our manufacturing processes.

Our running shoes, one of our major products, feature the core technology of MIZUNO WAVE, whereby a wave-shaped plate is used in the midsole to fulfil the two seemingly contradictory requirements for running shoes: cushioning and stability. MIZUNO WAVE disperses and absorbs any vertical shock, while boosting horizontal stability.

For over 10 years, we have been using Pebax®Rnew®, a bio-sourced resin with a low environmental impact, to produce the wave plates for use in several shoe models. To date, we have sold a total of over 10 million pairs of such shoes worldwide. This has enabled us to reduce our environmental impact by cutting our CO2 emissions by a total of over 4,700 tons* compared to if we had used conventional petroleum-based materials, while still ensuring great functionality.

We are also promoting a variety of other initiatives, including the use of recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) materials for the manufacture of shoe parts such as the laces and the collar.

We are promoting environmental conservation efforts around the world, to ensure a better future for our planet and for all runners.
