Environmentally friendly shut-off pipe using the new material ‘basalt fiber’.

Mizuno Technics Co., Ltd., in collaboration with Yoshihara Railway Industry Co., Ltd., has developed an environmentally friendly shut-off pipe.

The shut-off pipe developed in this project significantly reduces environmental impact by replacing the conventional glass fiber with ‘basalt fiber,’ a natural-material-based reinforcement.

Basalt fiber is a material made from 100% natural basalt and is manufactured without the use of environmentally harmful chemicals. As a result, it has the distinct advantage of emitting no toxic gases or hazardous substances.
Furthermore, when incinerated, it does not liquefy but instead turns into particulate form, preventing adhesion to the inner walls of incinerators and avoiding damage to the furnace. This makes incineration treatment—previously difficult with conventional materials—feasible, contributing to the reduction of harmful emissions and helping to mitigate the release of microplastics.
